Hi Everyone!!

On October 22nd the Integrated Arts Initiative is going to have a showcase in the Student Center on the DePaul campus from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The Visual Arts Education department is going to have a live radio broadcast from the show. This is going to be put on by students that are currently in the program, and possibly those that stop by. There is also space for art work created by our department. If anyone is interested in showcasing their work please send us a high-resolution photo to put on the projection screen we will have. This show will consist of all the creative and artistic departments that are part of DePaul (Music, Theatre, Art/Art History, Visual Arts Ed, etc). Hi Everyone!
This is just a little reminder that the fall quarter is sneaking up on us and we're getting ready. Jim's office hours this fall will be Tuesdays 12-4 and by appointment. Feel free to contact us and let us know what we can do for you.

We are located in SAC 323 and our office number is (773) 325-4331.

Thanks everyone and we look forward to seeing you this quarter!!

Jamie Hale
Hello all Visual Arts Education candidates,
I am back from traveling and look forward to settling in. It has been a very busy year; but a highly productive one where the program has shared in the many benefits of these efforts. This summer saw work culminate in Denmark, as I was joined by artists from around the world to conceptualize a School for Non Productive Learning. A strong relationship has been forged with the Hyde Park Art Center as the Stockyard Institute has served as the artist in residence for the last year and a half. There are many other area sites of cultural production and teaching which include some schools that will help in providing teaching and artistic opportunities and well as research and student teaching.
I will be in the office regularly this quarter and by appointments. I realize that some people cannot easily meet in the morning and that the time after work and before a 5:30 class is often tight. Jamie Hale and I will set up a calendar to accommodate early and evening hours. I apologize to those who have been trying to meet with me and I promise it will be easier this year and immediate.
We are planning some wonderful events this year, including a critique night later this fall for current visual art education candidates and alumni. We are also working a bit closer with some schools that will hopefully aid in student teaching placements. This is an important effort and one that we will spend some time with in its organization. We are exploring a residency project as well as an intern program. Last year, Erin Simandl from the program designed an internship program with the DePaul University Art Museum that we will continue to build on because the relationship is both an important resource and an obvious one.
For those enrolled in SE 366/TL466 this fall, a new evening will be instituted. We will dedicate a night to ‘how to’ create some important and relevant documents for your use as a teacher artist or cultural producer. This will include writing a proposal for a project to a gallery, drafting a small grant for funding, writing an effective CV (resume), building an online visual portfolio for your work, a social bookmarking database and crafting a project for a Graduate Content Requirement (graduate students only). I encourage those in the program who already took the course to come by for that evening and sit in to gather materials for your professional use.
Please let us know what you would like to participate in or contribute to.

Thank you
Jim Duignan

Co-Prosperity Sphere 3219-21 South Morgan St. Chicago, Illinois USA!

Official Announcement attached at bottom of message
See for final schedule, images from Sociometry Fair 2004 Las Vegas, and current reports.

Background: Formed by students of The University of California San Diego in 1995, The Institute of Sociometry, or IS, was heavily influenced by a conceptual art program oriented around the art-as-life philosophy of performance-art pioneers and UCSD faculty Alan Kaprow and Elanor Antin. Sociometry, a word cribbed from the dictionary, is "the quantitative analysis of Individuals and their relationship to groups." IS practices guerilla sociometry which relies on subjective instigation and documentation.

Absorbing post-Fluxus and post-Situationist mail-art networking tactics, 'zine trading, and emerging internet technology, IS made contacts with like minded artarchists nationally and internationally. Based on the mail-order models established by comic book "secret agent" clubs and The Church of Universal Life mail-away reverend credentials, IS has mailed FREE credentials to 566 "special agents" in 21 countries. Active agents submit reports on and at the Sociometry Fair.

Since 1996 The Sociometry Fair has followed the same quadrennial schedual as the summer Olympics and the Presidential nominating conventions. Sociometry Fair 2008 is fourth in the series. Active IS agents present their previous four years of research on free standing tri-fold displays and motion pictures.

It is our Artadia's is to encourage innovative practice and meaningful dialogue across the United States by providing visual artists in specific communities with unrestricted grants and a national network of support. Founded in 1997, Artadia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Artadia Awards are determined through a jury process that employs nationally prominent curators, artists, and critics. Since its founding, Artadia has awarded over $2.0 million to more than 200 artists in Boston, Chicago, Houston, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

About the Application
The Artadia Awards web-based application includes an applicant profile section, an area to submit a C.V. (curriculum vitae/artist resumé), artist's statement and eight (8) images of artwork can be uploaded or time-based media can also be submitted. Media submissions may be sent by mail in addition to, or in lieu of the 8 digital images submitted online. The panel will only review up to 5 minutes of media submissions. Complete details are available once an application is initiated and the eligible applicant logs in.

About the Chicago Jury Process
The short list of finalists will be announced in September 2008, followed by the awards announcement in October 2008. An exhibition of the awardees' work and an accompanying full-color publication will follow. An exhibition is planned for 2009.

4. Call for participation::
Clothesline: Movement

June 21, 2008

Clothesline rests somewhere between an apartment show and a street art festival. In conjunction with the Summer Solstice, the Video Danse exhibition, and the International Day of Music HPAC is hosting our third un-curated open call for any and all artworks dealing with the theme of "Movement." All works are accepted and displayed in the 4833 resource library and the outdoor plaza in front of the main gallery for the duration of the opening reception and taken away immediately after. There's also a potluck barbecue and free wine donated by the French Embassy and dance, music, and theatre performances scheduled all day.

Clothesline is an extra-temporary occasional exhibition that includes any and all artists that want to be involved. We've retired the clothesline, but are keeping alive the spirit of immediacy and temporary inclusive art shows. All artwork is accepted and will be shown as a group exhibition in various locations around HPAC for 10 hours on Saturday June 21st. The show is as big or small as the artists that participate and all kinds of work are encouraged. For more information or to submit a proposal, contact show organizer Chris Hammes. chammes@hydeparkart.org

Every Monday from 4-6pm I have been meeting with high school students as you know from King HS and Hyde Park Career Academy HS. The Hyde Park Youth Arts Board is starting a talk show and launching HPACTV. I wonder if anyone is interested in helping to work with the kids. We have a few weeks to get a 30 minute spot ready for Creative Move, the 24 hour open at the Hyde Park Art Center. We are in need of help with the high schoolers who have no experience in organizing this effort. We have the equipment and resources. Anyone interested for the next 3 Mondays?
